Setting up your Stage.

There’s something to be said for creating the right environment to achieve a goal in. Setting up your stage can set you up for success. You can create your own precursors to the actual performance, so that it’s easier to begin.

If its exercise, it might be setting out your training gear ahead of time.

If it’s a work task, it could be a clear, quiet, bright space to do your best thinking in.

If it’s a delicious meal, a clean kitchen and the right ingredients are necessary.

If it’s a quality family-time activity, then it may be a device-free corner.

Once your stage is set, you can get on with the actual performance, without being distracted by the environment being wrong, or the props missing. You won’t be worrying about mis-matched socks; or desk clutter; or dirty dishes; or a distracting television. You’ll be focused on the role you have chosen to play – the runner; the knowledge worker; the chef; the caring mother/thoughtful friend/loving partner. Be mindful though not to use stage setting as a delay tactic. You’re just setting up. You don’t need new running shoes; a clear inbox; a new set of knives; or a new board game.

Try simply setting your stage, and arriving.  And then giving your best performance.
